This field trip will explore a 125-acre Riparian Preserve on the Verde River at Camp Verde. The Preserve is owned and managed by Salt River Project to provide habitat for the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher and the yellow-billed cuckoo. Although it will be too early in the season to see either of these birds, the site has a spectacular cottonwood-willow gallery forest that is host to black hawks, great horned owls, a large number of neo-tropical migratory birds and, occasionally, a bald eagle. There are no maintained trails or facilities. Wear good hiking shoes and be prepared to scramble through brush, over logs and sandy river bottom - a true adventure!
