Featured Artist for 2012 Tom Fish

One of the first birds I identified solo was the striking lazuli bunting. I was able to remember the colors of the bird until I checked its identity by thinking how the colors reminded me of the Arizona flag. I thought this beautiful bird would be a special tribute to our Arizona Centennial. We challenged local artists to use this bird along with appropriate symbolism in designing the art for this year’s event. Why not the cactus wren, our designated state bird? Not that this lively, charismatic bird does not deserve the title or the recognition. It was just that I wanted to share my story of the bunting that began my love of birding in hopes that it might remind us that the first bird we claim is always special.
