“Finches and Flowers”

In the spring our fancy turns to our backyard gardens and expectations of returning migratory birds. We are partnering with the Iris Society in Cottonwood as they show off vibrant blooms and we listen for the sweet sounds of spring.

Our contributing artist
Margo Mitchell

This isn’t the first time we’ve enjoyed Margo’s art as our featured artwork for the event. Margo has been a long-time supporter of the festival and contributed the tanagers we featured in 2009. Margo lives in the beautiful red rock country of northern Arizona, where she greatly enjoys hiking with her husband Aart.  Raised in a rural area east of Phoenix, her favorite subjects to paint are animals---horses, cattle, and, of course, birds.

Dedication
Steve Schmidt
Text Box: We sometimes find a small release from sadness by dedicating our festival to one of our own that we have lost. It’s a small tribute that we feel privileged to share. This past year we lost a loved community member. Steve Schmidt was not a birder but he supported this event with all his heart. He loved to drive for the field trips. He was the voice of the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce and used that opportunity to tell everyone he could about how much fun the festival is. He was liked by everyone; he liked everyone. An ambassador, a friend, a colleague…our lives are a little emptier without him.

Painting by Margo Mitchell an artist living in Cottonwood, Arizona. Link to Margo's web site here.
Mission: The Verde Valley Birding & Nature Festival provides a unique recreational experience to anyone interested in the natural world and fosters awareness of the importance of habitat for the enrichment of all life in the Verde Valley.
